Huge explosion in Paris carnival injures around 20 people
At least 20 people injured at Paris event including three critically – after an explosion at a popular French carnival.
The huge blast was reported at the Villepinte carnival, known as the Yellow Carnival, in a suburb of Paris, close to Charles De Gaulle airport.
The explosion happened as a effigy, made of wood and straw, was put on fire as part of the celebrations.
An eye witness report claims that explosion took place after the effigy was set on fire, sending debris flying into the crowd.
One man described the ground reality there was panic, and he saw “a man with a broken arm, a child with blood on his face, people running around to find their children”.
The carnival was due to start at 2pm local time today with a parade through the streets ending at a park.
The family festival was organised to celebrate and people were asked to come dressed in yellow, for the sun and good mood.
A percussion orchestra was due to follow the floats with dancers and musicians joining in too.
Dozens of emergency vehicles are at the scene.
A spokesman for the mayor Martine Valleton said: “It’s an unforeseeable accident.”
