French, African troops try to halt C. African Republic killings
Dec 07, Paris – France’s presidential palace says the African Union has agreed to increase its deployment of troops in violence-wracked Central African Republic to 6,000 troops.
Saturday’s statement from President Francois Hollande’s office follows a summit on African security and a follow-up meeting of regional leaders devoted to recent bloodshed in impoverished Central African Republic.
Earlier, Hollande announced that France was raising its own deployment by 400 to 1,600 total troops — leveraging a new U.N. mandate to try to return stability to the country. He had said earlier that about 2,500 African troops are now there.
