April 4, AP – Patna: The incident took place at Suiya village under Parasa police station in the Patna district on late Monday night, but was reported to the police only on Wednesday.

A woman in Bihar killed a rapist by setting him on fire moments after he had raped her after finding her alone in the house.

Police said the victim woman — a 45-year-old widow who is a mother of three children, all married — was asleep in her house on the fateful night when rapist Bhola Thakur entered into her house by somehow opening the door and then allegedly robbed off her modesty after threatening her with dire consequences. The accused also tore apart her sari and other clothes the victim was wearing at the time of incident when she offered resistance. After committing the crime, the accused who was in an inebriated state slept in her house.

The woman doused her sari with highly inflammable kerosene oil she had bought from the market to light night lamp at home and set the house on fire after locking the door from outside. Within no time, her thatched house went up in flames as she raised an alarm for help.

Hearing her alarm, local villagers woke up from their deep slumber and instantly rushed for help. It was then that they came to know about the entire incident and informed the local police. Soon after the reaching the spot, the police opened then door and tried to rescue the accused but by then he lay dead on the spot with his charred body going beyond recognition.

“We have arrested the woman and further investigation is on,” the local deputy superintendent of police Mutfiq Ahmad told the media on Wednesday. The police have also registered a case of a rape with the local police station on the statement of the victim.

In a similar incident, angry villagers of Patna torched the house of a molester, causing extensive damage to property. According to reports, four girl students were returning home after coaching on Tuesday evening when some six youths hiding in a house began molesting them. Somehow, they reached their house and narrated the entire incident to their family members who later rushed to the spot and the set the house on fire where the accused were hiding. The youths, however, managed to escape after seeing the mob of villagers.

The incidents of rape has assumed alarming proportions in recent months in Bihar despite ongoing nation-wide protests in the aftermath of rape-cum-murder of a Delhi girl on a moving bus. This year, a total of 66 cases of rapes have been reported till January, according to a police report. Last year, more than 800 incidents of rape were reported from across the state.
