Boy, 14, arrested in Saudi Arabia for dancing the Macarena in street

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in Saudi Arabia after a video of him dancing the Macarena in the street went viral.

saudi arabiaThe boy, who has not been identified, is accused by authorities of “improper public behaviour”.

It comes after a clip was shared online of him performing the dance routine to the famous 1990s hit in front of traffic in the city of Jeddah.

The boy, who was wearing headphones, appeared to briefly disrupt the traffic with the stunt.

Journalist Ahmed Al Omran who was among those to tweet the 45-second video wrote: “Jeddah boy dancing in the middle of Tahlia Street is the hero we need”.

But local police launched an investigation and tracked the boy down to arrest him.

According to Sabq News, the case will be referred to the public prosecutor.

Saudi Arabia has no formal legal system for children so judges and police have broad discretion on how to deal with minors accused of a crime.

They often face the same punishments as adults and Human Rights Watch has even reported cases of juveniles being sentenced to death.

Earlier this month, a singer was arrested and later released for ‘dabbing’ on stage.

The move, popularised by famous names such as footballer Paul Pogba, is banned in Saudi Arabia.
