Doctors say the case for the termination is “borderline” because it is difficult to establish how many weeks pregnant the girl is.

pregnant girlA ten-year-old girl who was raped by her stepfather has been forced to go to court to plead for an abortion.

The young child, from Rohtak in the Haryana state of India, is due to give birth in four months, but abortion laws in India could prohibit her from having a termination.

According to reports, the girl’s mother discovered she was pregnant and took her to see a doctor.

The child then told her parent that she had been repeatedly raped by her stepfather.

They had allegedly been left alone together countless times while the girl’s mother was at work.

The stepfather has now been arrested and detained in custody while a full investigation is carried out.

In India, abortions are not allowed after 20 weeks, and two separate doctors must be able to certify that the pregnant woman’s life would be in danger if she was to give birth.

After 20 weeks, India’s Supreme Court must decide if the pregnancy can be terminated.

Speaking to the BBC, Dr Ashok Chauhan, medical superintendent at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, said: “The police and the authorities will now take the report to the court which can order whether the child can undergo an abortion.”

But he the girl’s case was “borderline” and that it was difficult to tell exactly how many weeks pregnant the girl was due to lack of advanced technology.

Dr Chauhan added: “She is around 20 weeks pregnant, but it could be 19 weeks or it could be 21 weeks.”

The law was introduced in an attempt to prevent sex-selective abortion, which has led to an unnaturally high male population as sons became more desirable than daughters.

Millions of girls were being selectively targeted for termination before birth.
