Macedonia extends anti-pollution measures

Dec 24 Skopje, Macedonia – Macedonia has extended urgent anti-pollution measures in four cities including the capital until Tuesday. The measures include a ban on trucks from city centers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and instructions to private and public sector firms to allow pregnant women and employees over 60 to stay at home. People with asthma were added in new instructions Saturday.

hromedia Macedonia extends anti-pollution measures eu news2Schools have been advised to avoid outdoor activities. Heavy traffic and the widespread use of stoves as a cheap means of heating have resulted in pollutant concentrations up to 10 times over permissible levels.

Mask-wearing environmentalists marched Saturday demanding free public transport and a ban on imports of used cars to help alleviate pollution.
