Suicide bomber attacks Yemen’s defence ministry

Dec 05, – Sana’a: A suicide bomber drove a car packed with explosives into the gate of Yemen’s defence ministry in the capital Sana’a on Thursday morning, causing “a large number of casualties”, according to a source at the ministry.

The security officials say the blast hit the Minister’s convoy on Tuesday as he was travelling through the capital to attend a Cabinet meeting.

The say the Minister, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, was unhurt but that eight of his security guards were killed. The other five dead were civilian bystanders.

No one claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack, but it bore the hallmarks of the al-Qaeda and came a day after Yemeni authorities announced the death of al-Qaeda in Yemen’s No. 2 leader in an apparent U.S. airstrike.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media.

Gunshots were heard near the area as an ambulance rushed to the scene, a witness said.

Violence is common in Yemen, where an interim government is grappling with southern secessionists, Al Qaida-linked militants and northern Al Houthi rebels, as well as severe economic problems inherited from veteran President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
