Oct 10, – The duo have won two titles after coming together this year, a year which has seen Sania rack up five titles with three different partners, She called it the “best year of my career.”

hromedia - Sania aims for Slams with Cara BlackIt has been second time lucky for Sania Mirza. The Indian tennis ace, who called it a day in singles a long time ago, has found her calling in doubles. And she has been striking it rich with Zimbabwean Cara Black.

It has been a fruitful partnership so far which they intend to continue next year as well.

But it almost wouldn’t have been. The first time Sania approached Black, the Zimbabwean had hung up her tennis racquet to have a family. But it was to be only a sabbatical as Black returned to the scene after two years. Sania approached her again and Black agreed.

“The last time I asked her to play she decided to have a baby instead and she retired. So, when she came back, I had to nab her. I think that worked, really. The only time we played bad was the first set of the first match and from there on, we kept improving,” Sania said on Wednesday.

Sania was in Abu Dhabi to unveil a brand new multi-million health and fitness initiative by The Country Club, called ‘Country Club Fitness.’

Raju Reddy, Managing Director of The Country Club Group, headquartered in Hyderabad, India, also announced the appointment of Sania, as the global ambassador for the initiative. Sania said that the partnership has been wonderful and they plan to continue. “We have been playing together and, so far, the association has been great. It is a great opportunity for me as she has been to the No.1 in the world. She is coming after having a baby. And to perform and play at the highest level was amazing. So, we are really looking forward to next year,” she said.

Sania said that the reason that the combination has worked is because both bring different things to the table. Being different kind of players has clearly worked for them.

“We are very opposite players to each other and I think that’s the most important thing. We don’t give rhythm. I mean I hit the ball very hard and flat while she has extremely crafty hands. She is very good at the net and I’m very good at the baseline. More importantly, our personalities match and we are very good friends,” said the 27-year-old, who resides in Dubai.

Sania is not one to set targets but said that aim was to make this partnership work on a larger level and ultimately win Grand Slams.

“I just want to try and be as fit and stay healthy as much as possible. I have not set any goals as of now but our next aim is to win Grand Slams together,” said Sania.

Sania said that the plan was to keep getting better as their game would be found out eventually.

“At the moment, yes it looks like I have found the right partner as we haven’t lost a match yet. But its not going to last and now people will know our game and they will be on the look out for our weakness. So, we have to keep improving. She is coming to Hyderabad in December to train,” she said. Sania and Black won two titles in as many weeks when they won the Pan Pacific Open in Japan and the China Open.

She said that she was disappointed not be playing in the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, but added that it was not in her control.

“I’m disappointed to miss out on the season-ending tournament but you have to understand its not in my control. I played five tournaments with three different partners this season and if I would have done that with one person, I would be playing in that Championship. But that’s the way it is and you have to accept it,” Sania said.

Sania said that doubles is being appreciated in the Indian sub-continent. “In the sub-continent, the double event has got the recognition and appreciation it deserves. I have played in the singles and done well but there are a lot of players who have only played doubles, done well and made a living out of it. So, in Asia and the sub- continent it is very appreciative,” she said.

Sania, who got married to cricketer Shoaib Malik in April 2010, said that she wouldn’t be following in Black’s footsteps anytime soon. She said that when does plan to start a family, she would call it a day.

“I’m just 27 and my doubles partner Cara took that decision when she was 32 and now she is 34. So, I’m not planning that right now. Look, everyone is different if you ask me can I do what she did then I would say no. She herself never thought she would play and then she came back strongly. Kim Clijsters felt it and she came back. I’m not into the baby thing at the moment,” said Sania.

For now though, Sania plans to take a well-deserved rest and go on a holiday. “I plan to take three weeks off and not try to touch my racquet at all. I will start training after that. I came back here on Sunday from Beijing and literally I have been on the go. I’ve finally got some time off and will go on a holiday,” she said.
