12 killed in deadly shooting at US naval facility in Washington

Sep 16, – Washington Chief of Police Cathy Lanier said Monday that 12 people were killed in the shooting.

She had earlier confirmed in a press conference that one of the shooters has been killed, but said that police were “actively engaged” in a search for two other potential shooters.

All were in critical condition, but chief medical officer Janis Orlowski said “their chances for survival are very good.”

Large police response

Hundreds of police and federal agents from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene. Departures from the city’s Reagan National Airport were halted for around 90 minutes due to the shooting, according to airport spokeswoman Chris Paolino.

The Naval Sea Systems Command is part of the Navy Yard complex, the oldest military installation in the US.

The complex, which is located approximately a mile (1.6 kilomters) south of the US Capitol building, also houses a residence for the chief of the US Navy.
