Casualties reported as Spanish train derails in Galicia

July 25, – A train has derailed in north-western Spain, with casualties reported.

A high-speed train travelling from Madrid to Ferrol has crashed just outside Santiago de Compostela in the north-western region of Galicia. Sources indicate the train derailed near the station at quarter to nine Spanish time.

An emergency response team is on site. Initial reports suggest ten deaths though there is no official confirmation of casualties. The numbers are expected to rise as the crash occurred on the eve of a big religious festival in the area.

Spanish newspapers reported that at least four people had been killed.

The authorities confirmed the train had come off the tracks near the city of Santiago de Compostela, but could not confirm the number of casualties.
