Spanish envoy has been summoned by Morocco on migrants’ deaths

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — A ministry statement said the Spanish ambassador was summoned Thursday after the video was posted online. It shows the vessel striking the boat near the Spanish island of Lanzarote. Aside from the seven deaths, some others escaped.

Morocco’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Spanish ambassador after apparently learning from an online video that a Spanish Civil Guard vessel struck a small boat carrying Moroccan migrants in December. Morocco says seven migrants drowned.

The Spanish daily El Pais posted the video this week, saying the incident took place Dec. 13. It was unclear whether Morocco had been aware. The Spanish Embassy in Rabat said Ambassador Alberto Navarro “will communicate …. all information requested on this accident.”

Each year thousands of migrants try to reach Europe in small boats, often via Morocco.
